- Speaker – Elizabeth Cox, “New Zealand women in architecture and the story of Lucy Greenish”
After the AGM we are lucky to have Elizabeth Cox as our speaker, who will be talking about her book Making Space, and in particular the life of Lucy Greenish. Making Space: A history of New Zealand women in architecture tells a story of the barriers women have faced in an historically male dominated profession and champions the work of women whose careers had not been documented.
Making Space started with an appendix. Tucked away in book about Wellington architects from 1840 to 1940 was the only Wellington woman to have registered as an architect during that time – Lucy Greenish. She registered just over a century ago, in 1914. That write-up spurred Elizabeth on to find out more about her life, and what she found was a story of war, economic vulnerability, determination, an illegitimate baby, family secrets and records stretched across nations. Being a Karori resident early in her life (along with brother Frank, also an architect), this story is perfect to share with our Society.
Elizabeth Cox is a Wellington historian who specialises in both architectural and women’s history. She works as a senior historian at Manatū Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage and runs a consultancy business exploring the history of New Zealand’s heritage buildings.
Supper will be served after the meeting.
We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday 4 June.
